Watch out for scams while shopping online2016/5/30 上午 09:38:16
Mother’s Day is just right around the corner, and tons of people are thinking of getting their mom an intimate gift. But here’s a reminder: beware of scams while shopping online, don’t make your mom worry instead of making her happy.

Recently, Lee, a university student living in New Taipei City, got cheated when he was planning to get an Iphone SE as a Mother’s Day’s gift for his mom. He first saw the phone on a Facebook page, which was being sold at a price of NTD 15,490. He then messaged the seller privately and followed his instructions by transferring the money to his bank account, and the seller promised that he would send it to Lee once he received the phone. However, Lee didn’t receive the phone after a couple of days, and when he called, the seller’s phone was switched off, and he started to realize that he might have been cheated. He then went to check the Facebook page and discovered that many people were in the same situation as he was. Lee made a police report after.

Apart from Mother’s day, many young moms shop online for their daily commodities. A housewife, Xu, who lives in Yunlin County, bought 12 cans of milk powder on an auction site, and transferred NTD 5,998 to the seller’s bank account. But after that, the seller gave many excuses in not sending her the products. About one month later, the seller promised Xu that he would refund her, but two days later, the seller couldn’t be contacted anymore, and so she decided to call the police.

165 Anti-Fraud consultation inquiries stated that from 2016.4.11 to 2016.4.17, there were almost 90 cases of online shopping fraud. Criminal Police Office said that, although there are benefits of online shopping, for example, the diversification of products, convenience, saving time and costs and so on, it comes with risk too. The police has suggested people to choose credible online-shopping site and sellers, and never ever to use Line (a communication app) or other apps to carry out a transaction just because you want to avoid safety checking procedures or to get a discount. Here's a reminder for sons and daughters: In order to let your mom have a happy Mother’s Day, call her and chat with her when you have time, and keep her updated on the latest news of how the scammers cheat on the elderly by pretending to be government officials; and tell her that if she receives a suspicious call, hang up the phone and call 165 for verification.
